All of the finishes that I use - tung oil, walnut oil and polyurethane are completely food safe. I also use carnauba wax after the finish has cured to add a bit of sheen to the item. Carnauba is one of the hardest waxes that is food safe.
To care for and enjoy your wood product for years to come:
For food safe bowls, clean with warm water & mild soap. Towel dry completely and let air dry overnight. Periodically apply tung oil or walnut oil and let stand for at least 2 days before using.
For decorative bowls and vessels, apply oil as stated above when wood looks dry. After oil dries, apply a thin coat of carnauba wax or beeswax with a lint free cloth and buff to maintain a desired shine.
Avoid soaking in water.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight which will dry out the wood.
Do not put wood in the dishwasher or microwave.
